Neil Robert Nisbet

In Memorial

November 26, 1956 – April 8, 2022

Neil was a gentle, kind, and serene individual who won over the hearts of many.  Neil was born with profound physical impairments coupled with an unidentified cognitive disability, yet despite these barriers and the early expectations of physicians, he did not let it stand in the way of him living a happy and enriched life.

Originally housed at Woodlands School as a preschooler, Neil was eventually transferred to Victoria where he lived in a variety of group homes over his lifetime.  Neil loved water and eventually learned to swim and his favourite thing was to try new flavors of coffee!

A sweet and calm soul, Neil was blessed to have been cared for by numerous long-time caregivers throughout his lifetime and it was their loving care over the years which contributed to his longevity.

Neil passed away peacefully at Victoria General Hospital with his cousin and Committee, Linda Shirley, at his side.  He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Nisbet (Victoria) and his brother Brian (Toronto). He is survived by Brian’s wife, Mary Nisbet and their 3 children in Toronto and by his brother Kenneth and numerous cousins.

A private burial was held on May 6, 2022 at Oak Bay Burial Park where Neil rests next to his parents.  A special thanks to Thompson Community Services and their staff and the Community Care team of Island Health for their conscientious and loving  care of Neil over these many years and for giving him the opportunity to enjoy the smaller things in life that so many of us take for granted.
