Forbes (Ted) Edmund West

July 14, 1920 – February 16, 2015

Forbes (Ted) Edmund West, 94, passed away peacefully after a brief illness at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC on February 16, 2015.

Ted was born in Moose Jaw, SK and trained as a commercial airlines pilot shortly after high school graduation. Flying was his passion and he was later promoted to the rank of captain with Canadian Pacific Air Lines while still in his early twenties. He was also a longtime member of the BC Aviation Museum. It was during his time with CPAL that he met his beloved first wife, the late Kathleen (Kae) West (Baer), who was then a stewardess for the same airline. They were married for over 55 years until Kae’s death in 1999. Ted remarried in 2001 and was predeceased by his dear second wife, Eileen West (Keogh), who passed away last May.

Loving father of Mary Ann and Terry, Ted was also a devoted grandfather to Drew (Jenn) and Kyle and more recently, proud great-grandfather of Leah and Emily. Predeceased by his brother Robert (Bob) and sister Betty, he is survived by his younger brother Gordon as well as many nieces and nephews and their respective families.

Ted was described by everyone he encountered as kind, generous and a true gentleman. He had a wicked sense of humour, a sharp mind and lived his entire life independently and on his own terms. He will be deeply missed by all.

A celebration of Ted’s life will be held in Ontario in mid-July for family and friends. Arrangements TBA.

Condolence Messages

  1. I knew about Ted from Mary Ann (who I always referred to as M.A.E. West) when I played piano at The National Ballet School from 1976 to 2008. Though I never met her parents, I felt I knew them through chats with their loving daughter. On the NBS Studio to Stage tour that went to Yellowknife, Mary Ann told me of her parents’ romantic flying to this then-remote local. They were good people.
