Sharon Elizabeth (Burgoyne) Brodie

April 24, 2026 by Pacific Coast Cremation 17 Condolences

June 5, 1941 – April 21, 2026
“I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7)
Though it is hard to say goodbye, we sadly announce the passing of Sharon Brodie of Courtenay, BC. There is comfort in knowing that Sharon is finally at rest, free of pain and surrounded by family and friends who went before her and joyfully welcome her into her eternal home. Sharon was born in Kingsclear, New Brunswick, the second of seven daughters born to Frank Alexander Burgoyne and Frances Elizabeth (McCaughey). The Burgoyne home was a gathering place for family and friends on their journeys to and from mass at St. Dunstan’s church, downtown shopping, & Saturday mornings at the Boyce York County Market. Sharon’s first job was as a telephone operator for the New Brunswick Telephone Company. In later years we teased her that her first job prepared her for many years of phone calls, especially her marathon calls with her sister Rosemary. In 1961 Sharon moved to Montreal where she met and fell in love with her future husband, Walter (Walt) Brodie. They married in 1962 and in 1964 welcomed the birth of their son Dominic (Nic). To escape the cold winters in the east, Walt, Sharon and Nic moved to Courtenay BC in 1968. Though Sharon and Walt were busy with demands of work, they devoted their spare time supporting Nic, an avid athlete, in various sports, including soccer, lacrosse and hockey. Walt, a multi talented coach, organizer and mentor, and Sharon, an enthusiastic and energetic volunteer and cheerleader, supported the local teams.
Sharon was the type of person who made lifelong friends, from New Brunswick to British Columbia and many points in between. Loyal, supportive and always honest, Sharon was a rock for friends and family. She was never more than a phone call away, day or night. She treasured her trips home to Fredericton and enjoyed reunions with family and cherished friends.
Sharon was a renowned cook, baker, gardener and a skilled crafts person. Nothing gave her more pleasure than preparing gourmet meals for Walt, Nic and his wife Alison and her beautiful granddaughters, Sydney and Brooklyn. They were the light of her life. Her gingersnaps were famous, as were her cabbage rolls, both of which were in high demand. Even when she was no longer able to prepare meals, she looked forward to her family’s visits, and happily welcomed Alvin, Brooklyn’s boyfriend into the family fold as her adopted grandson.
Sharon lived her faith each day of her life. She inspired many, especially as her health failed because she refused to let her illness define her. Though her daily routine drastically changed with her illness, she journeyed on. She began every morning with mass, either on-line or in attendance. Then she would do her daily chores, even though it got harder with each passing week. She appreciated the care that healthcare workers provided to her on their twice daily visits. She welcomed visits with friends. Her hands were always busy knitting those beautiful, multicolored dishcloths, over 100 each year, which she distributed as Christmas gifts to many. And she ended each evening praying the rosary.
Sharon is survived by her son Dominic (Nic) and his wife Alison (Tarrant) Brodie, their daughters, Sydney Monic and Brooklyn Rene of Calgary, Alberta; her sister, Susan (Frank) Craig, brothers-in-law Stephen Thomas, Donald Gould and Kelly Brunsdon, in addition she is survived by Walt’s remaining siblings.
Sharon was predeceased by Walt, her husband of 58 years, who passed away in 2017, her parents, Frank and Frances Burgoyne, her sisters Anne Lister, Agnes Scribner, Catherine Hodgson, Maureen Gould and Rosemary Thomas.
Sharon wanted to live her remaining years at home. That wish came true and her family is eternally grateful to Dr. Sara Sandwith for her compassion and care in enabling Sharon to remain at home throughout her illness. The coordinated team of professionals who ministered to Sharon led by Paul, Shar and Tony and the whole homecare team, Chris and the Courtenay Pharmacy team and the nursing and lab teams who took care of her for the last three years.
Sharon was blessed with the spiritual support of the faith community of Christ the King Catholic Church. Father David Hoggman’s uplifting services nourished and strengthened her spirit, lay ministers Mary Catherine, and Stephen provided transportation to and from mass and brought communion to her when she was no longer able to attend mass in person, and all the parishioners of the parish who surrounded Sharon with spiritual support and love these many years. Special friends Dorothy, Judy, Jeanne, and Ray journeyed with her, always ready to provide transportation to appointments, completing shopping and household chores, and creating the beautiful floral arrangements and plants that adorned her living room and patio.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday, May 1st at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Church in Courtenay with Father David Hoggman as celebrant A reception will immediately follow in the church hall. Please join the family to share your stories of how Sharon touched your lives. A private interment will be held at a later date. Donations can be made in Sharon’s memory to Christ the King Parish https://www.ctkparish.ca/
The funeral will also be live streamed on Christ the King Comox Valley – YouTube (YouTube channel)
Adieu, to a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
A remarkable woman with a life well lived.
May you rest in peace, Sharon.

My heartfelt condolences to Nic,Alison,Sydney and Brooklyn . Although
I only met Mrs.Brodie a couple times, she was a great conversationalist.I felt as if I’ve know her for years through the stories and fond moments you would all share of her. Such a sweet lady, so kind. She didn’t know me well , but she didn’t forget to share her lovely dish cloths with me in a Christmas gift. Rest in internal peace, Sharon. May God keep you close in his arms and you sing high with the angels. Sending all my love and strength to get you all through this difficult time. Love you.

My parents met Sharon and Walter through hockey and lacrosse which my brother played with Nic. Even though we left Comox in 1981 Sharon stayed in touch with my mother until her passing in 2011 and then my father‘s passing in 2024. I spoke with Sharon I believe at that time she was just such a wonderful kind person and I’m so worried that I’m not able to attend her service. I will live stream it. Please accept condolences on behalf of the entire Grosvenor family.

Nic, Allison , Sydney and Brooklyn,
My sincere condolences on the loss of Sharon. Even though she was always geographically distant from Maureen and I she remained in constant contact with us .
We always knew the goings on of the Brodie family, and I might say in great detail. There is no doubt in my mind that she loved and cherished you deeply. I know she will be dearly missed by family and friends , but time and fond memories will lessen the pain you feel today. On a lighter side, I have and will continue to think of Sharon each time I wash the dishes. I have a large collection of her beautiful crocheted dishcloths that I use daily.
May the peace of our Lord comfort you during this period of grief. Love and hugs!
    Uncle Donnie

Nic, Alison, Sydney, Brooklyn and Alvin, please accept our deepest condolences on your mom and nana’s passing. Sharon led a remarkable life. Her interests were wide and varying but at the top of her list was her steadfast love & support for each of you. She was so proud of all your achievements, and they are many.

Nic, you parents taught you well. They taught you the importance of working hard, centering your life around your family, giving back to the community & always helping those less fortunate.

After I retired, I got to connect with Sharon almost daily, if not on the phone, then through texts. We reminisced about growing up in Fredericton. She definitely had the best memory of all my sisters. We shared many laughs and a few tears in those exchanges.

Sharon was a force to be reckoned with when she decided to do something. Whether flying across the country with Nic for a surprise 70th birthday party for our sister Rose, or flying to Calgary to surprise Nic, Alison and the girls on special occasions. Nothing stopped Sharon when she made up her mind.

On one of our many calls, I remarked to her that I couldn’t bake cookies. Well, that was an excuse that wouldn’t fly. She sent me all her favorite cookie recipes and when I still didn’t take the bait, she bought a Cuisinart mixer for me and had Maureen and Donnie deliver it. No more excuses and wouldn’t you know she was right again. Her cookie recipes are the best! Ever thoughtful, she didn’t want Maureen to be left out so she sent me the money to buy Maureen a Cuisinart too. She wore the mantle of older sister well. Always with our best interest at heart.

Nothing stopped Sharon. After her diagnosis and the long road ahead, she met each challenge with the same stubborn resolve. Months of radiation, long, painful recovery and setbacks, she forged ahead. She met every obstacle without complaint. What was most important to her was her faith, her family and her friends.

Love Aunt Susan, Uncle Frank and cousin Patrick

Dear Nic, Alison, Sydney and Broolyn,
Aunt Sharon was such a special lady to me. Not only my Aunt, but she as a friend who offered support, advice and generously, her time on so many phone calls when I needed her. She will be missed, but forever in my heart.

I am so sorry to hear about Sharon’s passing. I wanted to share a few memories and let you know how much she meant to me and my family.
My mom, Joan, met Sharon back in the early 1970s in Courtenay, BC, when they worked together at the motel and later at the Answering Service. I was just a little girl at the time, 5 years old, and I remember being so excited whenever we visited her. She had the most beautiful long, flowing hair, and she was always so kind to me. I still remember her buying me a Coke from the machine while my mom finished work and even making me my very first tuna sandwich—something I still love to this day!
Over the years, my family and I always looked forward to visiting Sharon whenever we returned to the island. We were also often the recipients of her fabulous baking and cooking, which was just another reflection of her generosity and care for others.
Some of my most cherished memories are of sitting with her while she rocked in her chair, sharing stories about the old days & my parents. Since they both passed away so young, Sharon became one of my last and most meaningful connections to them. I will always be grateful for that.
She was such a wonderful friend to my mom—despite my mom being absolutely terrified of her two Siamese cats! Their friendship meant so much, and it was clear how much they cared for each other.
One of my absolute favorite memories is from around 1979, when Sharon and my mom planned a trip to take Nic and I to see KISS in Vancouver. It was such an adventure—taking the ferry, staying overnight in a hotel, and then going to the concert. What an incredible experience for kids, and what a testament to what fun, thoughtful, and loving moms they both were.
I also know my dad worked with Walt over the years, which made the connection between our families even more special.
Sharon was truly a special person—kind, warm, and generous—and she will always hold a place in my heart. Please know that you are in my thoughts during this difficult time.
    With heartfelt sympathy,
    Darla & family
