Veronica Mavis DeRousie

Born February 10, 1939 in Victoria, British Columbia to Harry and Doris (McMillan) Ashworth, and passed away peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital on October 15, 2021 in Victoria, BC.

Veronica is survived by her three daughters Debbie DeRousie, Barb DeRousie and Dawn (Dan) DeRousie; her four grandchildren Michael Hansen, Alicia and Tanya DeRousie, and Justin Taylor; her great grandchildren, Bella and Mia DeRousie; her brothers John (Frieda) Ashworth, Russ (Ellen) Ashworth, Alec (Nancy) Smith, and sisters Yvonne (Lorne) Arthur and Aleta (Greg) Hansen; her nieces and nephews Ronda, Linda, Rita, Karen, Stephen, Sheryl, Derek, Wendy, Jeffrey and Kevin; and her long-time friends Carolyn Black and Debbie Duncan.

Veronica lived in Victoria until she was married in 1957 when she joined her husband to live on several light stations on the Westcoast of Vancouver Island. She recounts “Life on the lights was different and challenging at times, but [she] loved living off the bounty of the land and sea.”

Veronica loved to cook and bake, and the workmen who came to the light stations were spoiled with her fresh-baked bread, pastries and donuts! This remained her passion over the years, and even right up until she was hospitalized, she enjoyed her craft. She was known for her rich and flakey pastry for pies, served with none other than home-made ice cream—yummo!

Veronica was strong-willed, yet could be so funny, and could have everyone in stitches with laughter! She will be missed and remembered for these good times. May her spirit live on in the presence of her predeceased siblings, “Wally,” Marlene and Bernard.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the future, date to be announced.
