John Wood Gartrell

John Wood Gartrell, born in Noranda, Quebec on August 1, 1943, passed away in Victoria on September 3rd, 2026, after suffering a number of strokes and a long stay at Royal Jubilee Hospital. He lived a full and varied life, one shaped by curiosity, determination, and a deep devotion to the people he loved. At age 4, he contracted polio; his challenges became his strengths, as this early fight for life resulted in lifelong physical challenges and a strong, adventurous spirit. His family and friends will remember him not only for all that he accomplished, but for the warmth, energy, and generosity he brought into our lives.

John’s path in life reflected both intelligence and drive. He studied at McMaster University in Ontario (where he met Mary) and earned an Arts degree. He then spent a year at Osmania University in India. This first-hand exploration of cultures and customs became the foundation of his research and education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he completed both his Master’s degree and PhD. He pursued a 33-year career as a Professor of Sociology, which suited his sharp mind and his interest in people and the ways they live, think, and connect with one another. He taught at University of Guelph, University of Western Ontario, University of Alberta, and University of Hawaii.

Those who knew John will remember him as positive, gregarious, and deeply introspective. He had a way of making others feel welcome, and he could strike up a conversation with just about anyone. He was generous with his time and energy, and he brought a lively presence wherever he went. He was also adventurous, fun-loving, and spirited, with a strong determination that carried him through life. At the same time, he could be stubborn and headstrong, qualities that were part of his strength and gave him a distinct and memorable personality. He was very intelligent and ambitious, always moving forward with purpose, but never losing his sense of enjoyment in life.

John also knew how to enjoy life. He loved music, swimming, golfing, socializing, and travelling around the world with Mary; he approached these pleasures with the same enthusiasm he brought to so many other parts of his life. His love affair with Hawaii gave him opportunity to share the beauty and values of the island with his family and friends: the culture, food, music, and the aloha spirit! Connection and conversation were important to him, and he took genuine delight in the company of others. His interests reflected his lively spirit and his openness to the world around him.

Above all, John was a family man. He is lovingly remembered by Mary, his wife of 61 years, and by their children, Michael (Andrea), Christine (Fraser), and Beth. He is also loved and missed by seven grandchildren: William, Carolyn, Maddy, Charlie, Ayla, Grace, and Sam, and two greatgrandchildren: Charlotte and Arthur, who affectionately knew him as Tutu. He is also survived by his sister, Jane, his brother, David, and was predeceased by his brother, George in April 2026. John’s kindness and devotion to family were among the qualities that made him especially beloved. He gave his love freely and fully, and his family was at the center of his world. The bonds he built and nurtured will remain an enduring part of his legacy.

John will be remembered with affection, respect, and gratitude by all who knew him.  His life was marked by accomplishments, but it was his kindness, his devotion, and his vibrant presence that will be cherished most. He leaves behind a family who loved him deeply and a circle of friends and colleagues who will not soon forget him.

Rest in peace.
