It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Ruitenbeek, beloved husband of Nita (pre-deceased in 2021), father of Laura (Michael), Sharon (Randy) and David (Julie), and Opa to three grandchildren. John was born in Doorn, The Netherlands and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1952, settling in Victoria. John spent his entire career outdoors as a gardener, working on a road crew in the late 1960s, criss-crossing the province to landscape provincial government buildings before spending decades working at Government House, taking special pride in caring for the rose garden.
As a life-long member of the Christian Reformed Church, he found ways to contribute to the church community, serving many terms as a deacon and an elder. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling and living near the ocean before moving to a retirement community. He passed away while in palliative care at Beckley Farm Lodge, his home for the last year. We thank the staff for providing excellent care and ensuring he was comfortable in his last days.
A celebration of life will be held at Victoria Christian Reformed Church on Friday, May 29, 2026 at 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mustard Seed Food Bank.
