September 13, 1945- April 11, 2024

Our mom, grandma, great-grandma, sister and friend passed away peacefully after a short illness. She is predeceased by her husband, Reg Hayward, and her sister, Jennifer Emerson. Darlene is survived by her siblings Carol, Marie, Wayne (Sandy), Lee and Laurie. She also leaves behind three sons, Craig (Debbie), Greg (Michele) and Gerry; grandchildren, Cassandra, Alishia, Ron, Craig Jr. (Katherine), Katie (Ryan), Taylor and Sara; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Tristan, Brodie, Chloe, Jake, Max, Aria, Logan and Hudson. Darlene also leaves behind seven step-children and their families, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and many good friends.

Darlene was born in Sidney, B.C. and was raised in the Victoria area. She fondly remembered early childhood on the Saanich Peninsula with her grandmother Edith. She raised her children in Victoria and in Alberta. Darlene worked for many years, first with Shoppers Drug Mart and then at the B.C. provincial government in finance, retiring in 2000. When her husband retired, they relocated to 100 Mile House, B.C.

In retirement, Darlene took up quilting and in the following years created many masterpieces that will provide comfort and memories around all who have one. Through quilting, Darlene made many friends. She was involved in groups who created quilts for charity, but mostly she created items for family and friends. She entered her work in fairs in Central Saanich and 100 Mile House, winning numerous ribbons for her art.

She and her husband were active in the Forest Grove Legion and participated in many social events. She fondly spoke of the friends on their road in 100 Mile House , reflecting on the enjoyable evenings spent taking part in potlucks or playing cards. She also spent her time knitting and crocheting, and was an avid gardener. The other great joy of Darlene’s life, Snowball, arrived during this time.

Darlene returned to Victoria in 2021. In the last two years there have been many opportunities to spend time with family. She loved them fiercely and was most happy when her sons and their families were about. She’ll be remembered as a devoted mom and a wonderful, involved grandma who shared her knowledge and took pride in her family’s accomplishments.

A private family burial was held at Royal Oak Burial Park and a celebration of Darlene’s life will be held at a later date.

Still with heavy heart I miss Dar. She was more like a sister to me than a cousin. During her younger times she spent with our family in Ladysmith off and on. Having gone to school for a short time in Ladysmith. We had many chats and visits together over the years. Until me meet again. With love💔😢
