Frank Earnest Short

August 14, 2026 by Pacific Coast Cremation 3 Condolences

April 24, 1935   –   August 1, 2026

On August 1, 2026 Frank Short peacefully passed in Victoria, British Columbia at 91 years old surrounded by the love of his family.

Frank Earnest Short was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada to Eva and Sam Short. Frank was raised in Winnipeg with very modest beginnings where education was emphasized by his parents and his older brother Bernard who became a Physics Professor at McGill University.  Frank attended Champlain Macharay Elementary School, St. John’s Tech High School, University of Manitoba, and graduated from University of Toronto School of Dentistry in 1958. Frank practiced general dentistry for 11 years and then went to Indiana University for post-graduate study in 1969-1970 for his Masters in Periodontics. He practiced Periodontics for 37 years in the Medical Arts Building for the remainder of his distinguished career in downtown Winnipeg and retired from practice in 2008. Frank was also Assistant Professor part time in Periodontics Graduate Program Faculty of Dentistry of University of Manitoba where he mentored countless dental students and helped shape the next generation of dentists. He was a member and past President of the Winnipeg Dental, the Winnipeg Chapter of Alpha Omega Fraternity, and of the Manitoba Periodontal Society. He’s been a member of the Royal Canadian College of Dentistry, Member of the International College of Dentistry, and Editor of the Canadian Society of Periodontics. Frank was also a long time member of Glendale Country Club.

Frank was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Frank was thoughtful and dependable and known for his kind and generous nature. He always remembered birthdays and important occasions and was truly a loyal friend to many. An accomplished golfer and ping pong player, he won the Ontario Dental Golf tournament back in the day and came home with many trophies from winning the ping pong tournament of almost every cruise he traveled. Frank was a passionate world traveler with his wife Doreen and in total they managed to go on 19 cruises throughout the world.

In 2020, Frank and Doreen relocated to Victoria, British Columbia to be closer to their daughter Erin where they enjoyed more of their retirement together surrounded by the beauty of the west coast.

Frank is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife Doreen, sharing their last wedding anniversary of 67 years in May 2026. Frank is survived by his son Howard (Heather) and daughter Erin. His grandson Jesse Short-Gershman preceded him in death in October of 2014. Frank is also survived  by his granddaughter Hannah, grandson Chandler, and great grandchildren Triniti and Journi Callender. He is also remembered by many extended family, friends, former colleagues, students, and patients whose lives he touched.

Frank’s integrity, kindness, generosity and quiet strength were apparent in everything he did and he truly made a lasting difference in the lives of others.

Frank Short’s compassionate spirit, unwavering integrity, and love for his family will remain in our hearts forever. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will continue through the many lives he touched.

A tribute to a great man is the depth of his influence on his family and life achievements.
From the brief time that I knew Frank, I found that he not only did accomplish all of that, he made sure that his wife of 67 years was taken care of during his final heroic and painful battle with his own illnesses. The courage that it took to do all of that in a condition that had him at his weakest strength, is nothing short of incredible. With the steadfast care provided by his daughter Erin is testimony to how well he invested deep into his family. Frank Short demonstrated that there are still heroes and will be remembered as one of the greatest that I had the pleasure to meet. Together the couple traveled the world and built amazing memories during their time together.
He shared their favorite song “More” by singer John Gary, with me and this verse sums up how he felt and loved her .
“Longer than always is a long, long time,
but far beyond forever, you’ll be mine.
I know I never lived before
and my heart is very sure
No one else could love you more.”

May he finally rest in peace .
To Doreen and his family, I offer empathy and support throughout this difficult time.
